Team Canada’s Junior Women’s National Team (JWNT) took on the United States this Sunday ending in a tough 69-49 loss to the USA squad. This loss ends the Lanzarote tournament for the JWNT with a solid effort made by the whole team. The JWNT continue their efforts Thursday in the FIBA World Championships in Lithuania.

The United States squad came out strong in the first quarter limiting Team Canada to only six points. The United States grasped a 14-point lead at the end of the first making the score 20-6. Team Canada improved scoring chances, but Team USA still kept a good distance leading 36-22 at the half.

The United States improved their lead to 50-36 after three quarters of play with a great offensive effort. Team Canada came out hard in the fourth quarter, but could not tame the strong USA squad. A hard battle fought by Canada as Team USA went on to win the match 69-49.

Forward Emily Potter led the team in points and rebounds dishing out 14 points and adding six boards. Forward Quinn Dornstauder contributed 10 points in the contest. The game statistics are available here.

When asked about her team’s performance, Regina native Quinn Dornstauder answered, “We got off to a slow start, but once we started to figure things out we came together as a team and battled hard. This is great preparation as we get ready to compete in the world championships in Lithuania.”

Head Coach Rich Chambers reflected on the match stating, “After the girls settled down, we competed hard. We played hard defensively after the first quarter. The last three quarters they beat us by a total of six points. We did a good job of offensive transition, but we didn't keep them off the boards. We did a good job stopping them from running their transition offense.”

The JWNT are back in action Thursday as they take on Senegal to compete at the FIBA World Championships in Lithuania. The game is set to tip-off at 5:45 a.m. (ET).
