If you want to coach highly competitive teams at the senior high school or university basketball level, the Train to Compete Certification will give you the knowledge you need to have an edge on your competition. The Train to Compete planning module will give you everything you need to know to run a year-round basketball program.
Topics will include: important aspects of managing an overall sport program in accordance with the LTAD model; acquiring the ability to monitor performance, develop recovery plans, calculate train-to-competition ratios, and adjust volume and intensity; and performance planning, scouting and how to effectively manage your staff.
The course will run on Saturday, February 22nd from 9:45am - 6:30pm and Sunday, February 23rd from 9:30am - 2:30pm, in addition to other CAO events.
With the phenomenal list of coaches on board, the Train to Compete Planning Module, held in conjunction with the Coaches Association of Ontario, will be a first-class professional development experience.

Shawnee Harle is currently the Assistant Coach with the Canadian national women’s team. She first became involved with the program in 1994. Shawnee played as a student-athlete at the University of Victoria and won two CIS National Championships under Kathy Shields. She has a wealth of coaching knowledge and experience that come from 20 years as a CIS head coach, as well as various duties with Canada Basketball’s program internationally. Shawnee has a Master’s Degree in Coaching Studies and is the only basketball coach in Canada with National Coaching Certification Program Level V. She is also a Master Learning Facilitator for the NCCP. Shawnee is the Director of Coaching Development and Technical Director with Basketball Alberta. She will be part of the panel on Saturday morning presenting the ‘Ten Habits of Highly Successful Coaches’.
Mike MacKay is the Performance Manager with the Women’s High Performance Program at Canada Basketball. He is a long-time coach, mentor and educator and previously held the position of Manager of Coaching Education and Development with Canada Basketball. He is a Master Learning Facilitator with the NCCP and was a major contributor to the development of the Canada Basketball Coaching Curriculum being taught through the NCCP.
Dawn Smyth is the Manager of Coaching Education and Development at Canada Basketball. She began assisting the University of Ottawa prior to pursuing a Master’s in Coaching and studying at the National Coaching Institute at the University of Victoria, where she was mentored by Ken Sheilds. Upon completion, she began coaching in the CCAA as an assistant with the Camosun College Chargers men’s program and then the head coach of their women’s program. Following this, she was the Head Coach of the Red Deer Queen’s where she focused on developing strong student-athletes. She remained there until beginning her current role with Canada Basketball, which has taken her to basketball cultures around the world.
Shaun McGuinness has extensive experience working with high level athletes in British Columbia, coaching with many provincial teams and working as an assistant coach at the Centre for Performance. He was an assistant coach with the University of British Columbia women’s basketball team where he helped them win two national championships. He is currently a teacher and athletic director at West Vancouver Secondary. He was honoured as the 1999 3M Canadian High Performance Coach of the Year.
Greg Francis is the Head Coach of the University of Waterloo men’s basketball team, after previously being the Head Coach of University of Alberta and leading them to a CIS silver medal at Nationals in 2012. He has both played and coached in the NCAA Division I Tournament. He played his collegiate basketball at Fairfield University from 1994-1997, has played professionally, and also represented Canada at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia. In addition to his CIS coaching experience, Greg is the Head Coach of the Canadian Junior Men’s National Team and is an assistant coach of the Senior Men’s National Team under Head Coach Jay Triano.
Christine Stapleton is currently the Associate Director of Athletics at the University of Waterloo. She had previously been a National Development Coach with the Canadian women’s program. She made Canadian basketball history by leading the 2004 Junior Women’s National Team to its first-ever FIBA World Championship berth. She was honoured as the 2001 3M Canadian High Performance Coach of the Year. Christine achieved all of this after a successful playing career at Laurentian University, where she won back-to back national championships.
Andre Desjardins is an assistant coach with the Cadette Women’s National Team. He is very involved in developing athletes as a TAS Coach and Ontario Nike CP Coach for boys and girls in the east region. He is a secondary school teacher at Louis-Riel, where he is the head coach for both the boys and girls basketball teams.
