(EDMONTON, AB) August 11 – The Women’s National Team is undefeated after beating Dominican Republic 111-36 at the 2015 FIBA Americas Women’s Championship in Edmonton, Alberta.

“We have a lot of offensive weapons. We talk a lot about taking high-quality shots and executing our offence,” said Head Coach Lisa Thomaidis. “A lot of our focus tonight has been pushing our pace and that was showcased tonight.”

Miranda Ayim led Canada in scoring with 15 points. Six Canadians hit double-figures and the Women’s National Team shot 12-24 from beyond the three-point line. Genesis Evangelista led the Dominican Republic in the loss with 15 points. For full box score, click here.

Canada continued their trend of strong first quarters. The Women’s National Team jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the opening minutes but defence was the story of the quarter. Strong ball pressure forced shot clock violations and tough shots for Dominican Republic. Team Canada won the quarter 23-7.

The second quarter was Canada’s best offensive quarter of the tournament as they dropped 35 points. Dominican Republic improved their offence, scoring 12 in the quarter, but they could not find a rhythm and catch up. Canada’s depth and fluid play was key to their dominant performance. At the half, Canada led 58-19.

The Canadians made half-time adjustments and locked down the Dominican Republic. The Dominicans only scored eight points in the quarter to Canada’s 27. A balanced scoring attack led to another strong quarter and Team Canada led 85-27.

With the result solidified, Canada did not let up. The Women’s National Team played hard and ran the fast break well, cruising to a 111-36 final.

“It’s a matter of going into the off-day and being prepared as we can. This is a team we see a lot now,” said Kia Nurse on playing Cuba on Thursday.

Canada’s 3-0 record is the best in their group.

On August 13, the Women’s National Team takes on Cuba (2-0) at 6:30 p.m. MT. Fans can watch the game live on TSN and TSNGO.
