Feb 2, 2012

CALGARY – University of Calgary men's basketball forward Boris Bakovic had a milestone weekend and led his team to a big-time sweep of their archrivals, earning Canada West athlete of the week honours in the process.

With a step-back three-ball early in the fourth quarter Friday night in a 67-66 win over the Alberta Golden Bears, Bakovic passed Saskatchewan's Andrew Spagrud's career scoring mark of 2,182 points – the most ever in the combined histories of AUS, OUA, and Canada West. He finished the weekend with 32 points and now sits at 2,199 for his career.

More importantly for his team, Bakovic was a major factor in Calgary's huge two-game sweep of the Golden Bears. His record-breaking three came during an 18-0 run Friday night that turned a 13-point deficit into a five-point lead, and he made two significant consecutive shot blocks in the final minute to preserve the tight one-point lead for the Dinos. He finished the night with 24 points, adding a game-high 11 rebounds as the Dinos eked out the one-point win.
