Canada Basketball Announces Rosters For Fiba U18 3x3 World Championship

TORONTO – Canada Basketball announced the athletes who will represent Canada at the FIBA U18 3x3 Championship. Canada will be represented by a U18 men’s and women’s team at the tournament, which will take place Alcobendas, Spain from September 28th-30th.

Canada’s U18 men’s team is comprised of Brody Clarke (Toronto, ON), Chris McComber (Nepean, ON), Marko Pirovic (Bolton, ON) and Troy Reid-Knight (Vaughn, ON).The team leader will be Shawn Swords.

Clarke, McComber and Marko Pirovic all have experience representing Canada. Clarke was a member on the 2011 cadet men’s national team, while McComber played on this year’s cadet men’s team that finished fifth in the world this year. Pirovic played on the junior men’s team that placed third at FIBA Americas U18 championship this year.

The men’s U18 team was placed in Group A with Belize, China, France, Iran, New Zealand, Poland and Slovakia. The first team of each group will advance to the quarterfinals, the second and third team of each group will play a preliminary heat, from which four teams will advance to quarterfinals.

Canada’s U18 women’s team will be composed of Shay Colley (Brampton,ON), Sam Cooper (Sudbury, ON), Saicha Grant-Allen (Hamilton, ON) and Kia Nurse (Hamilton, ON). The team leader for the U18 women’s team will be Denise Dignard.

The team will not lack experience, as Colley, Grant-Allen and Nurse played on the bronze medalling cadette team this summer at the FIBA U17 World Championship and Cooper played on the junior women’s team that placed fourth at FIBA Americas U18 Championship this year.

In women’s U18 team will play in Group C with Australia, England, Israel, Romania and Tunisia. In order to qualify for the quarter-finals, Canada will need to come in the top two in their division.

The FIBA 3x3 U18 World Championships will also feature individual skills competitions - including the Nike Dunk Contest and the Samsung Shootout Contest - as well as numerous side events and entertainment for attending fans.

The first-ever FIBA 3x3 U18 World Championships took place in Rimini, Italy, in September 2011, with New Zealand winning the boys' tournament and Spain prevailing in the girls.
