Canada Falls To China In Second Game Of Jdic
CHINA’S DEFENSE TOO MUCH FOR CANADA TO HANDLE IN FRONT OF A SOLD OUT CROWD
Richmond, British Columbia – In the second game of the Jack Donohue International Classic, the Canadian Senior Women’s National Team lost a tough game to China 67-51, in front of a sold-out crowd at the Richmond Olympic Oval.
“I thought tonight there was a long stretch of non-execution and it led to a run by China,” said head coach, Allison McNeill. “We had opportunities for a couple of free throws to keep it to two possessions and we missed those, as well as a couple of easy shots.”
Teresa Gabriele (Mission, BC) led Canada in scoring with 13 points and added 8 steals.
China’s Shanshan Li had a game-high 15 points.
The first quarter was a very even affair to begin the game. Canada made a late 9-4 run to gain a 19-14 edge at the end of the quarter. Alisha Tatham (Brampton, ON) led the way during the first frame with 6 points, while Krista Phillips (Saskatoon, SK) continued to be a force down-low with 5 points in the frame.
China’s defense rose to the challenge in the second quarter. They held Canada to only 10 points, while their offence continued their success by scoring 18 points in the quarter. China had the 32-29 lead, heading into halftime.
In the second half, China’s defense found ways to shut down the Canadian offence. After shooting 60 percent in the opening game of the series, Canada shot a mere 39 percent on this night. China started the second half with a 10-4 run and never looked back. China held Canada to only 22 points in the second half to preserve the win.
McNeill commented on the Chinese defense by saying, “defensively I thought China cranked it up a little bit and we will need to match that intensity in tomorrow’s game”
Teresa Gabriele and Zengyu Ma were named players of the game for each of the teams.
The next game in the 2012 Jack Donohue International Classic will be played on Friday, at the University of the Fraser Valley in Abbotsford, BC. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. local time (10:00 p.m. ET). Tickets are still available at the door, and the game will be available to watch live online at http://sportscanada.tv/.
