(Toronto, Ont. August 7, 2014) - The Junior Women’s National Team used the same formula and achieved the same result in their second game of U18 FIBA Americas group play. Canada (2-0) defeated Mexico (0-2) 81-54, in Colorado Springs, U.S.A.

Similar to the opening game against El Salvador, Canada put an emphasis on getting to hoop. Team Canada finished with 42 points in the paint and 27 free throw attempts, converting 21 of those shots from the line.

“The girls came out tonight extremely focused and they exercised the game plan almost to perfection,” said head coach Rich Chambers. “In those first three quarters, everyone contributed. We are extremely proud and excited to be able to represent Canada at the World Championships again next year.”

Carrying over the strong defensive effort from the previous game, Canada held Mexico to a nine-point first quarter. Mexico could not break down the Canadian perimeter defence and was forced to take contested jumpers at the buzzer.

Much like the first game, Canada struggled to find their shooting touch early, scoring 19 and 15 points in the first and second quarters, respectively. After halftime, Canada took control of the game and put up strong offensive numbers: 23 points in the third and 24 points in the fourth.

Christina Buttemham (Hamilton, Ont.) was the standout for Canada, scoring 15 points on 7-11 shooting. Her seven rebounds were a team-high.

Daneesha Provo (Dartmouth, N.S.) scored 15 points as well, with 11 of those coming from the free throw line. Provo also racked up a game-high three offensive rebounds in her 22 minutes of action.

Cheyenne Creighton (Ajax, Ont.) provided a lift off the bench, contributing nine points and seven rebounds in only 16 minutes.

“I thought that we executed well and followed the game plan. We were excited going in because we knew we could qualify for worlds,” said Creighton. “Against the United States tomorrow, we have to go in level-headed and take it as a new game.”

Canada will take on the U.S.A. at 7:30 EST. The game will be live-streamed at fibaamericas.com.
