There’s not much Jay Triano hasn’t experienced in Canadian basketball.

He was a record-setting star at Simon Fraser, played for the Canadian national team for 11 years, was team captain for two of his three Olympic appearances, coached the national men’s team and has spent the past 10 years in the Toronto Raptors organization, serving stints as assistant coach and head coach.

You don’t have to spend much time talking basketball with Triano before it becomes obvious why he was named honorary chairman of the 2012 CIS Final 8 men’s basketball championship in Halifax, March 9-11. His enthusiasm for the game in Canada is contagious.

He’s a big believer that all levels of basketball here — including the NBA Raptors, the minor league NBL of Canada, the CIS and kids’ minor ball — have to help each other to make it all work.
