Grand Falls-windsor Youth Takes Top Prize in Free Throw Competition

Grand Falls-Windsor resident Adam Cooke has something to brag about.

The Grade 7 student at Exploits Valley Intermediate recently defeated over 200,000 competitors in an international free throw competition.

Since 1972 the Knights of Columbus have held an annual International Free Throw Championship for boys and girls between the ages of nine and 14.

"In Adam's group of 11-year-old boys, there were three winners in total, and three had tied scores," said Emile Cabot regional State Deputy, Knights of Columbus Newfoundland and Labrador. "He was the only one in Canada, the other two were in the U.S."

Cooke shot 74 out of 75 free throws in succession to claim the prize, and he is not done yet.

"I'd like to make the NBA," said Cooke. "I'm definitely entering it (the free-throw competition) next year. It;s unbelievable that out of 250,000 people, I can come win the competition."
