Jmnt Wins Opening Game Of Fiba Americas

Brazil – The Canadian Junior Men`s National Team opened their FIBA Americas U18 Championship with a win over Puerto Rico, 77-51.

It was a solid start for our team today, said head coach, Roy Rana. “We came out with a lot of energy; guys played together and made extra passes. Trey Lyles dominated today and we look forward to playing Colombia tomorrow.”

Canada had a great start to the tournament. In the early moments of the first quarter Puerto Rico owned a 7-6 lead, but after that Canada starting clicking and went on a 18-3 run to finish the quarter with a 24-10 lead. Into the second quarter, Canada continued to play well as they extended their lead to 26 points as they took their 43-17 lead at the half.

To start the second half, Canada and Puerto Rico played a fairly even third quarter as Canada scored 20 points to Puerto Rico`s 15. Canada went into the fourth quarter with a comfortable 63-32 lead. In the fourth, Canada was able to give all players playing time and won the game 77-51.

Trey Lyles (Saskatoon, SK) led the way for Canada, as he had game-highs in both points (17) and rebounds (16).

“It was a great win for us today, said Canadian forward, Trey Lyles. “We all contributed in the win and hopefully can take it throughout the tournament.”
