ST. CATHARINES, Ont. (August 10, 2022) – Day 3 of the boys and girls basketball tournament at the 2022 Canada Games on Wednesday was qualification day, with teams jockeying for quarterfinal positions.
In both tournaments, teams in Pool A received automatic byes straight to Thursday’s quarterfinals. Teams on Wednesday who didn’t make the quarters will, instead, play in consolation games to finish out their Canada Games.
On the boys’ side, Team Nova Scotia topped Team Yukon 118-40 to reach the quarterfinals, Team British Columbia reached the quarters with a 123-36 decision over Team Northwest Territories, Team Alberta made it into the knockout round by defeating Team P.E.I., 82-66 and, lastly, rounding out the teams that made the quarterfinals, Team Newfoundland and Labrador emerged victorious over Team Alberta 71-64 in a nail-biter of a game that had the Meridian Centre rocking with raucous supporters on both sides.
In the girls’ tournament, Ontario routed Yukon 120-17 to punch their ticket into the quarters, New Brunswick beat the Northwest Territories 102-39 to make the quarterfinals, Nova Scotia edged past P.E.I. 69-61 to make the quarters and, unlike their male counterparts, the Manitoba girls managed to defeat Newfoundland and Labrador 89-64 to become the final team to qualify for the quarterfinals in their tournament.
