(Toronto, Ont.) – Canada finished sixth at the U17 FIBA World Championship for Women in Pilsen, Czech Republic after a 69-39 loss to Australia.

Canada’s Kendra Van Leeuwen was the statistical leader in the loss, wrapping up the tournament with 10 points and seven rebounds. Bridget Carleton chipped in with a game-high 11 points and three boards.

Australia used a balanced attack to get the win, with their two leading scorers finishing with 10 points each. Anneli Maley earned a double-double, with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

“I think overall today's game was a disappointing result. I don't think we played to our abilities. We lost to a tougher team today,” said Canada’s head coach, Carly Clarke.

Post-game, Clarke offered her thoughts on the whole tournament.

“I think we had some highs and lows. If you look schedule-wise we played 7 of the top 10 teams and we probably had one of the more challenging schedules of the tournament but that's the reality of a world championship. I think in the end we probably underachieved a little bit but hopefully our girls learned what it takes to play at this level,” Clarke said.

Chelayne Bailey echoed her coach’s thoughts and talking about the learning experience of the World Championships.

“Overall, it was a really good experience being at this U17 tournament. We got a big reality check realizing that we can't just come out thinking we are going to win. We have to fight no matter who we are playing. We can't underestimate any team at these tournaments. We need to always fight for the ball and not give away any possessions at all,” said Bailey.
