Abuse of any kind has no room in our game.
Canada Basketball supports the decision of the Metro Basketball Association, a Halifax minor basketball organization, to ban spectators from games this weekend following an alarming increase in abuse towards officials, players and facility staff.
Due to ongoing abuse, the Canadian sport system is facing an officiating crisis with officials and referees choosing not to return to the game. Officials are a critical part of our game and should not be subject to offensive language or aggressive behaviour.
Spectators have an important role to play in ensuring that basketball is an inclusive and safe environment for everyone.
Canada Basketball believes that everyone has the right to enjoy the sport at whatever level or position they participate. Athletes, coaches, officials, and volunteers have the right to participate in a safe and inclusive training and competitive environment that is free of abuse, harassment, or maltreatment.
