‍TORONTO (Dec. 30, 2022) – As the calendar year comes to a close, we're counting down our top 10 moments of the year voted on by our Canada Basketball staff.

With plenty to look back on, in a year that featured more Canadians on the professional stage, and plenty to celebrate on and off-the court, we'll spend the next two weeks highlighting one moment each day - take a look at numbers 1-10.

#1. Senior Women's National Team finishes fourth at FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup, highest finish since 1986

(October 1, 2022) - Canada's Senior Women's National Team put together a series of strong performances in Australia at the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2022, culminating in a fourth-place finish - their highest at the tournament since 1986.

There was plenty to celebrate for Canada as not only was Bridget Carleton selected to the tournament All-Star Five but two-time Olympian Kia Nurse also returned to the court for the first time in 11 months following a knee injury last summer.

Canada will begin their path towards the Paris 2024 Olympic Games next summer at the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup 2023.

#2. Canada’s 3x3 women’s team dominates; wins Women’s Series gold, silver at World Cup, gold AmeriCup

It was a summer of utter dominance for Canada’s 3x3 Women’s National Team.

Their historic year saw them win three of the eleven total stops along the FIBA 3x3 Women's Series 2022, including the finals in Constanta, Romania, their first FIBA 3x3 AmeriCup title after beating Brazil in the final (15-11), as well as a hard-fought silver medal Crelan FIBA 3x3 World Cup 2022.

The team heads into 2023 with the all four players – Michelle Plouffe (1st), Paige Crozon (2nd), Katherine Plouffe (3rd), Kacie Bosch (7th) – ranked in the top 10 of the FIBA 3x3 Individual World Rankings.

#3. Senior Men's National Team Qualifies for  FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023, Undefeated 10-0

(November 10, 2022) - Canada’s Senior Men’s National Team was unstoppable in 2022 during the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 Americas Qualifiers as they became the first team from the region to successfully qualify for next summer’s World Cup.

#7. Andrew Wiggins named NBA All-Star, captures NBA championship with Golden State

(June 17, 2022) - It was a historic year for Canadian small forward Andrew Wiggins who was named an NBA All-Star for the first time in his career on his way to capturing the 2022 NBA Championship with the Golden State Warriors.

Wiggins became just the third Canadian to be selected to an All-Star team, joining Steve Nash and Jamal Magloire as Canadians to receive the nod.

(October 18, 2022) - For the ninth consecutive year, Canada was the most-represented country outside of the U.S. as the 2022-23 NBA season tipped-off.

A record 22 Canadians were named to NBA opening-night rosters, while the Toronto Raptors featured eight international players, marking the second consecutive season the Raptors lead the league.

(June 3, 2022) - Canada Basketball launched “Look Beyond,” a safe sport marketing and awareness campaign, to highlight interactions, situations and behaviour that is not acceptable or welcome in sport.

‍#10. Edmonton's Matt Kallio Becomes First Full-Time International NBA Official

(October 13, 2022) - NBA Senior Vice-President, Head of Referee Development and Training, Monty McCutchen, announced that Matt Kallio had been promoted to full-time NBA staff officiating status for the 2022-23 season.

Kallio‍ became the first international official to join the full-time NBA officiating staff.

The Edmonton, Alberta native has seven seasons of NBA G League and four seasons of WNBA officiating experience. He worked 10 NBA regular-season games as a non-staff official during the 2021-22 season. Kallio has been a FIBA official since 2012 and was assigned to officiate at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
