Women's National Team Beats Venezuela 101-38 In Toronto 2015 Opener
Toronto, ON - The Women's National Team's opening group-stage game ended in a 101-38 win over Venezuela at the Pan Am Games in Toronto, Ontario.
"We've talked about the depth of talent we all have and I think that was showcased tonight, said Canada's head coach, Lisa Thomaidis. Point guard, Shona Thorburn added, "Our starting five gets us out to a great start and the bench comes in - we tire teams out, we're hard to defend." Lizanne Murphy applauded the home-town fans by claiming, "Usually we're (players) the only ones singing the National Anthem. It was really cool to hear the whole crowd sing with us - it gave us goosebumps."
Beaconsfield, Quebec native, Lizanne Murphy finished the game with 15 points on 6-11 shooting to go along with 9 rebounds and 2 blocked shots while Shona Thorburn shot 100% from the field for a total of 14 points. Canada came out firing on all cylinders as they started the game on a 13-2 run. The quarter set the precedent for the entire game as Canada played tenacious defense and hit shots when they needed to. At the end of the frame, Canada lead 23-8.
Canada continued to pull away in the second quarter as solid shooting from Kia Nurse and Lizanne Murphy gave Canada a stronger cushion - going into the half up by 29 (48-19). Shona Thorburn shot 3-3 from the field for 8 points and Kim Gaucher grabbed 4 rebounds to close the half.
Canada hit their stride in the third quarter and created even more distance between them and Venezuela. Stellar team shooting (11-13 FG%) and gritty defense by Nirra Fields and Tamara Tatham gave Canada a 77-35 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The Women's National Team came out strong in the fourth quarter. Shona Thorburn continued her stellar shooting and Miah Marie Langlois solidified her playmaking skills by finishing the game with 6 assists. After an unsportsmanlike foul late in the frame from Venezuela, Canada never looked back as they cruised to a 101-38 victory over Venezuela.
Canada will play Argentina tomorrow at 6:00PM at the Mattamy Athletic Center in Toronto, Ontario. It will be their second group-stage game of the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am Games.
